There are tons of pre built nas devices from the likes of qnap synology or asustor. There are several means of spinning up a raspberry pi media server but my favorite option is plex. My mac is getting old can t work on it as cpu go up to 100 while family is watching. That changed recently with the release of raspberry pi 4 model b which sports a quad core arm v8 64 bit soc up to 4 gb of ram gigabit ethernet and usb 3 0 ports.
I use several computers for my plex servers. 1 dedicated for friends and family and 1 for 4k inside the house. It takes several minutes for a movie to start streaming a mp4 file to atv in the same lan. For a cheap plex server the raspberry pi is a surprisingly capable device.
It could not transcode any video. The raspberry pi with its tiny footprint and low power draw makes for the perfect network attached storage nas device. Plus you can access the nas to back up pictures and other files. The plan is to move the plex server to raspberry pi.
It should be a economical replacement for the media function. So far no issues. Not only is it an inexpensive linux computer about 35 but it has very low power consumption. A typical laptop uses 60 watts per hour the raspberry pi uses 1 4 watts per hour.
Plex media servers are great for storing and accessing all your movies tv shows and other media. To install the plex packages to the raspberry pi we will need to add the official plex package repository. To reduce both bills use a raspberry pi for a plex server. Until 2019 raspberry pi was not a great option as a server for plex media server. My nas is purely for storage. Unfortunately plex server hardware can be expensive electricity intensive or both. A diy plex media server running off of dedicated server hardware offers loads of flexibility and expandability.
So far the raspberry pi 3 is not powerful enough for me. In this article we test the feasibility of making and actually build a standalone plex server from a raspberry pi 4 and a hard drive. I would do a nas. The big advantage is the room to grow.
